Dear Sabra community,
All my life, hummus has been at the center of the table, and at that table were friends and family. As the person who leads Sabra, I am proud of our dedicated team, focused on making safe, delicious, wholesome foods that you can feel good about eating by yourself or serving when your family and friends gather together.
As you know, last month we made the decision to voluntarily recall our hummus products based on findings in our facility, but not in tested finished product. We took this step as a measure of precaution because safety is our priority- always.
I was personally touched that in a challenging moment, so many of you stood by us, encouraged us and provided support. We at Sabra value the trust you’ve placed in us so we wanted to quickly come back to you and share our plan moving forward.
Our food safety program begins the minute ingredients arrive at the facility. We have an extensive raw material testing program in place to reconfirm the safety of ingredients before we start using them. Our proprietary cooking process is enclosed, which means that from the time tested raw ingredients begin their journey, until hummus is dispensed into its packaging, the recipe and culinary process remain within a sealed system, protected from exposure to the environment. Further, as part of our protocol, Sabra hummus products are then subjected to intensive finished product testing. This currently includes the taking of samples of finished product from every line, every two minutes as a quality control check on the effectiveness of our process. These product safety measures combine to result in a hummus that meets rigorous food safety standard.
Since the recall, we have engaged widely respected experts to work with us to elevate our food safety standards. We developed a detailed action plan to further diminish food safety risks. In the days immediately following the recall we:
In the coming days and weeks, we will go above and beyond to make our facility environment even safer. We will look at ways that we might reimagine all aspects of our food production and manufacturing, such as significant modifications to equipment design to enhance processes within the facility.
Sabra’s mission is to create better for you, fresh tasting food to enrich your life. This goal will continue to drive us to be nothing less than the model company in producing food made with fresh tasting, wholesome and flavorful ingredients like beans, vegetables, herbs and spices.
Thus, in early 2017, we will convene an advisory panel comprised of leading food safety and manufacturing specialists to help enhance our plans and keep us apprised of best practices, leading technologies and procedures. Our goal is to always exceed industry and regulatory expectations and standards. Not only will we do the work but will keep you updated on our progress here.
Again, many of you expressed your continued support and love of our product. We are so grateful and thank you for that and for your patience. I promise we will work tirelessly to maintain your trust.
I can tell you that Sabra product is on its way back into the market. It may take a little time to get back to each shelf, but I assure you everyone here is working tirelessly to make that happen.
We understand that you may have questions or concerns, and we want to hear from you. Please visit us here to share your thoughts: http://sabra.com/contactus.html

We are disappointed to share the news of a voluntary recall with the Sabra community today. We’re recalling this product out of an abundance of caution after finding Listeria monocytogenes at the manufacturing facility, but not in tested finished product.
We have invested heavily in technology and enhancing our processes and protocols, with guidance and input from external experts, to develop and put in place industry-leading food safety procedures, such as testing finished product from the production line every two minutes for pathogens including listeria. We want to reassure our consumers that our procedures include extensive finished product testing, and no products tested positive for contaminants. We are taking action because consumer safety is a top priority.
Subsequent to the inspection conducted with the FDA, we implemented a thorough and extensive factory-wide cleaning and sanitation procedure, and beyond that, we continue to work very closely with internal and external food safety experts to identify any additional steps we can take to even further enhance our efforts.
The food industry continue to advance standards and procedures to improve food safety protocols nationwide. Working closely with the above mentioned experts, we are striving to exceed that and lead the industry in food safety.
Everyone here is working our hardest to minimize the impact, so we can get back to doing what we love most – bringing the Sabra community delicious fresh foods. The people at Sabra remain committed to producing and delivering great tasting and wholesome hummus made with kitchen fresh ingredients that consumers can enjoy with peace of mind. We encourage you to reach out to us at 866-265-6761 if we can help answer any questions.

Updated on November 23, 2016 with new information identified by asterix (*).
(November 19, 2016 Colonial Heights, VA)— Sabra Dipping Co., LLC is voluntarily recalling certain hummus products made prior to November 8, 2016 due to concerns over Listeria monocytogenes, which was identified at the manufacturing facility but not in tested finished product. The recall includes the products listed below; these were distributed to retail outlets, including food service accounts and supermarkets, in the U.S. and Canada.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. The company is issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution.
Consumers with any product with a “Best Before” date up through January 23, 2017 are urged to discard it. Consumers can find code and “Best Before” date on the lid of each package.
* The Sabra Party Platter Selects contains sealed and capped containers of Sabra Classic Hummus 7oz; cheese and Genoa Salame sliced at Daniele International, Inc; and pre-packaged breadsticks. The Genoa Salame is a USDA regulated product; the Party Tray includes the USDA mark of inspection next to the salami packaged in the tray and “EST. 9992” next to the pre-packaged breadsticks in the tray. These Party Trays are subject to recall; the entire contents of the Party Tray should not be consumed due to the potential for cross contamination of other tray components with the recalled hummus through consumer handling.
No other Sabra products are affected. In particular, Sabra products not included in the recall are: Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole and Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips.
Consumers can contact Sabra Consumer Relations at 1-866-265-6761 for additional information from 9:00 am to 4:30 PM CST. The company has subsequently taken steps to correct this matter.
The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
